Mr. Collins

When evaluating the behavior of Mr. Collins, it is important not to jump to any conclusions.  Yes, Mr. Collins is undoubtedly a pompously sexist moron; however, in the 19th century, his behavior is suggested to not be so far of from the status quo of males.  He may, in fact, be the nightmare of that time period; however, Austen suggests that many other men acted like him.  Mr. Collins sexist notions are extremely exaggerated to bring attention to the reader of the injustices of the time period, which makes him a fairly comical character.  Evaluating Mr. Collins with a 21st century interpretation would suggest that he is the epitome of a patriarchal figure.  While his behavior may have unnoticeably assimilated into 19th century society, it would definitely seem even more shocking in 21st century society.

  1. I agree with most of what you say however you're rather harsh to say the least. I agree that he is very assimilated with the male norm for the time period but you fail to mention that maybe this is the nightmare.. Maybe Austen is warning men of the time period that they need to respect the ladies more..

  2. Good analysis of Collins' arrogance; however, you stereotype men of the period entirely as rude and crass. Undoubtedly, Collins epitomizes these traits of men. And yes, he is extremely sexist. But, why? Perhaps he has had reoccurring problems with the opposite sex. Who knows.

  3. Jordan- Firstly, I really enjoyed reading this paragraph! Your writing is so fluid and offers the audience such insight not only on your topic of discussion but on you. Additionally, I liked how you took the approach of applying Collins's behavior and comparing it to that of other males in society at that time. It allows us to put it in perspective and remember that this wasn't taking place in the 21st century. I felt I learned a lot just by reading this paragraph! Great perspective approach.
